Fabricland Isn't Carrying Simplicity Patterns Anymore...

Yes, Fabricland won't be carrying Simplicity patterns after August 1st, 2013. Something about an increase in costs. Generally I side with Fabricland on very few issues. But on this one I agree. Simplicity has written off its Canadian customers. Which is too bad, since of the Big 4, I find the cut and sizing the best. And I like what Simplicity has to offer.

I've tried ordering off the Simplicity website but they have farmed the Canadian distribution out to another company who charges insane postal rates. (And I'm Canadian, I'm used to paying insane shipping from the States...). So what to do?

Well, since I swore off Big 4 patterns for a year (and have fallen in love with Colette Patterns, Style Arc, Cake, and Sewaholic Patterns!!!), it really isn't my issue right now. But it should be Simplicity's issue. What company wants to tick customers off so much that they stop wanting your products?

Honestly, when the new Autumn pattern line was released yesterday, I thought it was a bit lackluster...

This top appealed at first but then I thought it must need a very thin knit for all that fabric twisting....
And this looked nice too until I realized it is made in a heavy knit. What? I live in Canada! I need a real coat!

Of course, some of there retro patterns from the summer
are great ...but not in the cards for me....

Other than the $3.99 sale on pattern review, I think if I wanted to pick up a Simplicity pattern, I would really have to download it from the site. Something I don't like to do since it is only available to me for one year rather than for 3 -5 downloads which would be more fair.

  1. Oh Nothy I feel your pain. Simplicity charges $50 to ship three patterns to NZ or some such c-rap!!! We've tried complaining to them but we get the usual stupid response that shows they know less and care less about what happens outside of the US.

  2. I suspect we will be having the same issues here in Australia as well. Not yet with Simplicity, but I have subscribed to Vogue Patterns magazine for year. It's not turning, and when I checked the Australian Vogue website - gone!! I don't think they want the small countries - but I also think the pattern companies are struggling themselves - I've seen the catalogues get smaller and smaller with less and less. And I have seen the rise of the independents - I suspect that is the way the future lies.

Very annoying and frustrating for you.

    1. I never thought of that. Of the Big 4, Simplicity is my favourite so I would be upset if it went out of business. Do you think it could merge with Vogue/McCalls/Butterick?

  3. They is very very strange as the Fabricland stores in BC are still continue to sell simplicity and have no intention of stopping. On the Fabricland Ontario website is has a notice about simplicity patterns no longer being available. But there is nothing about it on the BC Website. Sounds fishy to me. Something that is only happening back east. This is why I prefer other stores like Fabricanna.

    1. Fabricland is the main fabric store out here -except for a few locally owned ones if you happen to live in the right area...Maybe Fabricland Ontario will change its mind if enough of us react.

  4. Yes BC is going out of them as well, maybe not everywhere but in Chilliwack BC our store still sells what stock they have but wont be getting more.

  5. I e-mailed Simplicity about this very thing a while ago because it seemed to me that Fabricland's justification that a pattern price going up by over 100% was forcing them to stop selling Simplicity, I couldn't really dispute their rationale. Here's the reply I got from Simplicity, which didn't really address my concern about why they were jacking up their prices ... but I was given a list of Canadian retailers who were still selling them.

Thank you for writing, we would be happy to help. Here is a list of stores that sale our patterns in Canada.

    1. Simplicity either doesn't want Cdn business or it is struggling and doesn't have the resources for Cdn business right now. I wrote and offered to be their CDN distribution point person for their website sales - right now to order SImplicty patterns through the website Cdns incur ridiculous shipping prices, way beyond the ridiculous prices we pay elsewhere. SO I thought, why not get an import license and offer to ship Cdn orders out at a fair shipping price for Simplicity. No answer.....which is too bad because I love Simplicity and New Look patterns.

  6. As a retailer in Victoria, BC who sells New Look patterns, I was told that New Look couldn't be sold in Canada anymore since it doesn't have French instructions. I was very disappointed as i find these patterns very good for beginner students since they have clear instructions, great designs and sell at $5.95 each!

    1. Sorry for the late reply to this. I love New Look pattern as they are affordable and they are well put together. I think we should just link to all pattern instructions in whatever language we like - wouldn't that be one way to overcome this?

  10. A late response, but regarding Simplicity patterns no longer available in Canada...I was told today by a retailer that they were no longer selling patterns here since they do not want to print instructions, etc in French.

    1. Did they used to print them with a French portion too? I can't remember. Wouldn't be nice if they just linked to French, Spanish, etc pages..

  12. I just ordered a Simplicity pattern from sewingpatterns.com....shipping to Ontario was $8 US, but the pattern was on special for $2.99 US....ie: total was less than the face value of the pattern. Not sure how long it will take to get here, but so far so good.
